How To Easily & Safely Backup Your Files and DATA Online
Posted on March 30, 2009 by admin
For many folks out there, by the time they realize they need a backup for their files, its too late. In a digital age like ours, people store everything from photos, movies & music to work files, emails & contacts in their computers and often make the mistake of assuming that they are safe until the worst happens- a Digital Data Disaster! For example, your hard disk crashes or someone decides to play “computer geek” and before you know it, you’ve lost EVERYTHING.
Methods of backing up your computer
There are a couple of different ways to backup your DATA. For a long time, before I started using an online backup service, I used to backup everything on my PC and Mac by using the Windows Backup Program and the .Mac Backup Program to save my files and DATA. Eventually the hassle of having to burn CDs or DVDs each time, lead to my purchase of an external hard drive for dedicated use as a backup device.
However, because of the constant aggravation involved in not only backing up my files, but in transferring files from my PC to my Mac (because of compatibility issues), I eventually decided to backup my files online using a secure online service. This not only simplified the entire process, but it allows me to access my files anywhere I go, as well as easily downloading them to any type of platform without the hassle of compatibility issues.
If you are not in the habit of backing up your files, I highly recommend that you at least start backing them up to an external drive using your platform’s own native software program like I used to. If you do not have an external hard drive then consider purchasing a drive made by Seagate, as they make some of the most reliable drives out there. Check out PCMall.com for some great deals on Seagate External Hard Drives. You don’t have to spend a fortune. They have some starting at around $80, which should provide plenty of space for backing up your computer.
However, if you want to save yourself some hassle…consider storing online.
Online backup storage
The best option in my opinion, is choosing a good online backup storage provider, such as Keepit.com. This can really simplify things in the long run and free you from the worry and hassle of manually backing up your computer.
For one, there is no need for CD’s or an external hard drive since everything is stored securely online.
Also, the software is easy to use and is set to be automatic so you don’t even have to launch any applications, requiring you to do nothing. It automatically backs up only the files that you create or change each day.
The Storage Space is UNLIMITED! This is one thing I really love about Keepit. Try finding a hard drive with that kind of storage.
NOTE: Keep in mind, that the faster your Internet connection, the faster your files will upload to Keepit. For this reason I recommend Keepit only for those with a Cable or DSL Internet connection to their computer.
All of your backup DATA is encrypted before it ever leaves your computer to go to Keepit’s secure facilities, and you are the only one given a 256 bit encryption key to access them, so Files are stored Safe and Secure (you must be sure to keep your Key in a safe place- if it is lost, so is your information).
Finally, at $4.95 a month, the price is right!
NOTE: Mac and Linux users: Keepit does not currently support these platforms but they are coming very soon, so keep an eye out.
